In the second segment of the episode, the 2nd Floor Superhero known as Diamond Sparkle fulfills the role of interviewer. "Diamond Sparkle" is the superhero code-name of Amelia, one of our Grade 2-3 students.
During the past 2 months, the Grade 2-3 and Grade 3-4-5 teachers and therapists have helped Amelia and the other 2nd floor students create superhero identities for themselves. In becoming superheroes, the students identified and celebrated the physical, social-emotional and developmental skills at which they excelled, and targeted and worked on the skills and tasks that can be challenging for them.
As they supported the student superheroes, the 2nd floor staff created superhero versions of themselves too.
CCGS Speech Language Pathologist Katelyn Salvato assumed the role of a very specific superhero found in the Marvel Comics universe. Ms. Salvato costumed herself as and became Sapheara, a hearing-impaired Marvel superhero with cochlear implants. Marvel created Sapheara to represent and empower children like Dahlia and Amelia who have hearing issues. Sapheara works with another inspirational hearing-impaired Marvel superhero named The Blue Ear (he wears hearing aids, like the Marvel Avenger Hawkeye did back in the 1980's).
